En esta clase se hablará del "direct speech" and "indirect or reported speech"y en estos los tiempos verbales cambian al pasar a cada uno de ellos.
Cuando queremos comunicar o informar de lo que otra persona ha dicho, hay dos maneras de hacerlo: utilizando el estilo directo" direct speech" o el estilo indirecto reported or "indirect speech".
LA DIFERENCIA:
DIRECT SPEECH (ESTILO DIRECTO): Cuando queremos informar exactamente lo que otra persona ha dicho, utilizamos el estilo directo. Con este estilo lo que la persona ha dicho se coloca entre comillas y deberá ser palabra por palabra.
EXAMPLES:
" He is american". He said
"I am happy to see you". Mary said
INDIRECT OR REPORTED SPEECH ( ESTILO INDIRECTO): El estilo indirecto, a diferencia del estilo directo, no utiliza las comillas y no necesita ser palabra por palabra. En general, cuando se usa el estilo indirecto, el tiempo verbal cambia.
A veces se usa "that" en las frases afirmativas y negativas para introducir lo que ha dicho la otra persona. Por otro lado, en las frases interrogativas se puede usar "if" o "whether".

| He said,'I must give Ken a call.' | He said he had to give Ken a call. |
| He said,'I have to give Ken a call.' | He said he had to give Ken a call. |
| He said,'I should see a doctor'. | He said he should see a doctor. |
Según los anteriores ejemplos podemos ver cuales son los cambios de los tiempos verbales cuando se pasa del estilo directo al indirecto.

Àl pasar de estilo directo a indirecto, no cambian los verbos modales: would (condicional), might (podría), should (debería), could (podría, pude), ni ought (debería). Tampoco la construcción "used to" (solía).
